[...] Since my day-job leans more into the public health and government agency arena–I couldn’t help but see the parallels between government 2.0 and non-profit 2.0 (for the sake of better terminology). We may have different goals and end objectives, but the concepts both verticals must address (transparency, policy, management, buy-in, metrics, etc.) cross both lines. I think the Path of the Blue Eye folks were onto something when they posted the other day about looking for learning opportunities outside your comfort zone. As evidence, I commend Steve Radick, who did just that when he recently posted about the crossings between government 2.0 and sports 2.0. [...]

Why not? For years, people have accused my Pittsburgh Pirates of keeping their payroll among the lowest in the league and padding their profits instead of reinvesting the money needed to compete for a championship. However, they claim that they lose millions every year, and that they can't afford to spend the money to sign the best draft picks or the best free agents. Yet, they refuse to actually open up their books to the public, so the perception is that they are only interested in turning a profit, not in fielding a winning team.

To the general public, it's hard to fathom how some teams can afford to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on free agents and others can't even afford small signing bonuses of tens of thousands of dollars. A Recovery.gov type of initiative could help fans better understand their favorite team's challenges and strengthen that affiliation.

You're kidding, right? A recovery.gov for private enterprise? So, in your mind, the stock exchanges should be eliminated because every company should be public?
